Sausage Making Through Time

It is now 10 years after our Century Farm party of 2006.  This blog has been hanging out unused for the past 10 years and I thought it would be fun to post a few pictures and thoughts.

Aunt Irene Unger and I dusted off the timeline created for the Century Farm Celebration, in preparation for an Unger family get together.  The timeline was in excellent condition (there was no dust).

One of the many excellent pictures we found was this picture of my Grandpa Bill wrapping sausage at the kitchen table.  It is particularly touching to me because I can imagine my own father in that exact same location, doing that exact same task in recent years, and throughout my life.  I am so pleased that the tradition of sausage making has endured and I have been able to share it with my children.

I guess I am not very good at being a blog moderater. I didn't realize that I had to sign-on to make people's comments available on the web. I just dusted off the Century Farm blog and realized there were three wonderful comments in which people shared touching stories about the farm.

So I am reminding a few people about the blog and maybe we can collect more stories. Check out the comments section and you will see what people have shared this far.

Some Facts About the Unger Farm

* Frank Unger bought the farm in 1906 from the Johnson Families.

* The original farm was 160 acres and cost $3,700.

* Frank rasied goats. There were as many as 50 unfenced goats on the farm at one time.

* Only German was spoken at home when Frank and his wife, Hermina, raised their six children.

* Frank grew 19 varieties of grapes on the farm as a hobby.

* After Frank's death in 1934, his second eldest son, Bill, began running the farm at age 15.

* In 1941, William married Margie. They had a log house built on the farm, just south of the main farm house.

(These facts were first recorded in the article called "History of the Frank Unger Farm" from the Frederick Unger Family Reunion book (1998))

Stay tuned for more stories and facts. Please add comments if you have stories or history to add.

Welcome to the Unger Century Farm Blog

We have created this blog to collect stories about the Frank Unger Farm that is turning 100 years this summer. We are planning a party this summer and thought it would be fun to collect stories on the internet. It would be great to have people post stories that we could share at the party and put in a book. If you have memories of the farm that you would like to share, let us know and we will get them posted. Thanks and let us know if you have any questions.
